The CSS women’s hockey team played Hamline University on Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4. Both games were hard fought by the Saints, but despite their best efforts, the MIAC games ended in losses.
The Saints played at home in the Mars Lakeview Arena in the first game against Hamline on Friday, Dec. 3. CSS led the game early on, scoring two goals, but Hamline quickly fired back, scoring five unanswered goals. The final score of Friday’s game was 5-2, resulting in the Saints first MIAC loss of the season.
The next night Saturday, Dec. 4, the Saints traveled to St. Paul to play Hamline again. The Saints took an early lead in this game as well, scoring the first goal of the game within the first five minutes. Hamline came back late in the first period scoring two goals and then one goal in the second period. The game ended with another Saints loss, the final score being 3-1.
The Script corresponded with two senior Saints hockey players, Kendall Markovic and Mariah Haedrich. Kendall Markovic, a senior defender majoring in nursing, recapped the Saints season thus far. “We’ve been doing really well…coming from the NCHA to the MIAC it’s been a pretty good transition.”
Markovic also remarked on how this season has differed from last year. “Last year with COVID, we were getting tested three times a week like all the time. So many people got COVID, we were in quarantine, we had to cancel practices.” Markovic continued, “Even season wise, we didn’t know if we were going to have a season until like December. In total we had 14 games last year, which is a lot shorter than this year will be.”
Mariah Haedrich, a senior forward majoring in nursing and psychology, recapped the games thus far and discussed hopes for the season. Haedrich said, “being in the MIAC now, we have to show up every single day because their teams are way better than what we faced in the NCHA.”
On discussing hopes for the season, Haedrich said, “winning a MIAC championship, but the little things are winning each game here on out and having a good second half.”
The Saints next game is on Saturday, Jan. 8 versus Finlandia. Markovic said, “The bulk of our games will come next semester,” so students come on out to Mars Lakeview Arena next semester and cheer on your women’s hockey team!
