The sisters of St. Scholastica are the foundation of the upbringing to the college. They pioneered the way of turning what used to be St. Benedicts Academy into a safe haven for the sisters. It was a Benedictine mother-house and academy in Duluth which is now what we call St. Scholastica. Some of this information is common, but what people don’t know is that the founder of the school Mother Scholastica Kerst also founded a secret underground hideaway for the sisters.
The hideaway was a secret that only the sisters knew about, until student Braelynn Bryant informed me that Sister Kathleen let her in on the secret. She felt she had to tell someone because the secret was too cool to keep to herself. Directly under the monastery is where the hideaway is located. You might be wondering what it looks like… but I can’t show you because I feel like that’s an invasion of their privacy so you just have to trust me.
I set out on a journalistic journey and I tried to interview Sister Kathleen about the hideaway and she spun around and disappeared. I was amazed and this made me think about why the sisters need a hideaway? I asked some students if they’ve seen any supernatural behavior expressed by the sisters.
The first student said: “Yes, I’ve seen the sisters early in the morning when I go workout. They’re like beasts in the weight room, like they have super strength or something!”
I dove into this theory more by asking students who are in Sister Lisa’s Dignitas class because they see her often and one of them said: “She comes to Dig everyday with sunglasses, I thought this was weird but didn’t really think about until she took off her sunglasses and her eyes were bright red like super man after using his laser eyes.”
After receiving this information from students it is confirmed it’s because they have secret powers and the hideaway is their outlet.
Before finding out this information I already thought the sisters were pretty cool and mysterious and I’m not even religious. A group of strong powerful women led by their faith to create an educational institute to build up more strong powerful women by educating them. That to me is a super power in itself especially when they accomplished this in 1892 when the odds were stacked against them. Very few things are cooler than that. Although they did become a smidgen cooler to me after I figured out they have powers and have a hideaway under our school. They are like the Batmans of St Scholastica; they could call themselves the Benedictine Batmans.
